Information campaigns

The Russian LGBT Network initiates interregional and national information campaigns. All the campaigns initiated by the Network aim to:

  1. Raise public awareness of the dangers associated with homophobia and transphobia, and create an understanding that these are forms of xenophobia and should not be socially accepted;
  2. Enhance the visibility of the community, boost its potential, ensure its protection, and engage it in various forms of civic activity;
  3. Get the state to acknowledge and obey the basic set of rights and freedoms necessary for the protection of human dignity of LGBT people and further work on human rights.

The Russian LGBT Network’s traditional informational campaigns are the Week against Homophobia (held in Russia since 2007), the Day of Silence (held in Russia since 2008), the Day against Homo- and Transphobia on 17 May (held in Russia since 2008), the Coming-out Day on 11 October (held in Russia since 2008), and the LGBT Victims of Political Repression Remembrance Day on 17 December (held in Russia since 2008).

"The Right Time To Say"

"Our world is home to people of different sexual orientations and gender identities. Unfortunately, each member of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in our country has to live under risk of being assaulted, disgraced or blackmailed. Nobody deserves that. Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and/or transgenders are people you might know personally and more likely they live right next to you. Some might be open to you, other would hide the truth scared or being judged, labeled and ostracized. Especially, since there is so much hate around. If you are not ready to lose someone you care about (a friend, a colleague or maybe a relative) just because they are different, it's about time to tell them you are gonna love them no matter what their orientation or gender identity is. It's the right time to say the words of support to all lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders around.

"The right time to say" is the slogan of "Anti-homophobia and anti-transphobia awareness week" held from April 1st to April 7th. Russian LGBT Network is the coordinator of the campaign.

The first anti-homophobia awareness week took place in 2007 as a part of "Everyone's different - everyone's equal" campaign by Council of Europe. A number of leading human rights and LGBT rights organizations took part in this campaign back then, and so it has become an annual event initiated by Russian LGBT Network ever since 2008.

Events and activities will take place all over the territory of the country, from Murmansk to Vladivostok. More than 50 seminars, workshops, concerts and other events are planned to be held within a week. You can find the programme of events here or you can also download it in pdf.
